9. Motions under Standing Order No 24
(A) Genetically Modified Food (Councillor C E Shaw)
This Council is concerned about the possible health risks of genetically modified ingredients in food. It acknowledges the LGA advice to local authorities to avoid supplying food containing such ingredients for the next five years and welcomes the Government’s decision to announce a year-long ban on the commercial growing of genetically modified crops, to ensure environment and wildlife is not damaged.
To ensure a measured response to this issue, the Council resolves to establish the position in relation to food served in County Council establishments in consultation with its suppliers as a matter of urgency and, depending on the findings, to take steps to remove such GM food from menus supplied by or on behalf of County Council services, as far as is practicable, until research proves GM food is safe.
